On Saturday, December 11, Mercury Lounge—that venerable institution of Ottawa culture—will be the setting for perhaps the most ambitious and glittering of GuerillaLIVE launch parties yet as we celebrate the season with Guerilla #26 online and in print.
“We’ve been courting the folks from Mercury Lounge for a while now,” said Guerilla editor and publisher Tony Martins. “But all the elements came together for December and we think we just may have ourselves the best GuerillaLIVE yet in store.”
Set to take over not just Mercury Lounge but also the connecting spaces Collection and Bar 56, this GuerillaLIVE Xmas edition is brimming with holiday happiness, including:
• A headliner appearance by the eclectic music collective J’envoie. This evolving and experimental group’s new album La Vitesse Des Chats Sauvages blends silky jazz elements with hard-stop rock for a unique and energizing sonic experience.
• A rare CD launch performance from Stoney Martins and the Outriders. Back in Ottawa for the first time in more than a decade, Stoney and his posse of hired guns are wielding a new album called No Good Cowboy that promises more of the band’s signature heart-wrenching country tunes and old-school blues bombshells.
• The Saucy Santa Photo Shoot. Produced in conjunction with the School of Photographic Arts Ottawa (SPAO), this frisky and festive photo feature will approximate the shopping mall Santa experience—but with an adult twist. Event attendees are invited to sit on Santa’s lap, whisper Xmas wishes, and hope that Saucy Saint Nick and his happy helpers don’t get too inappropriate while the shutters click.
• The Gatineau Godess Fashion Spectacle. Staged after 11 p.m. when the nightclub atmosphere kicks in for real, this roving showcase or Gatineau-style glamour will see two magnifique models blaze a trail through all three bars, pausing for impromptu photos while fussed over by feverish stylists. Can you catch the eye of a Godess?
Also in store on the evening are a poetry reading in Bar 56 by Michael Lista, contemporary puppeteer performers from Montreal, and of course DJ Lance Baptiste spinning from 11 p.m. in Mercury Lounge—plus several more surprises.
